Concerning the Word of Life

The Apostle John has been called a mystic, some say he was a practitioner of kabbalah. I say he was a man like us who knew Y’shua-Jesus and took seriously the life of Christ.

November 16, 2018 Quietude We are told that Christian life is a walk on a path, The Way. John is known for dramatic opening statements and the epistle of 1st John has a doozy of a statement about the path of life.!

What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life– 1 John 1:1

If you look carefully, John gives the progression of the experience of eternal life. In the beginning, Life was a reality from before creation, before we held an opinion about it. At some point, we hear about this life, maybe in Sunday school or from Gran’ma, maybe from a religious friend. It captures our interest, The word ‘heard’ in Hebrew, is to hear is not just sound coming into our ears. It is listening with an intention of being obedient. It is captivating, you want to know more. After hearing, John tells of seeing with our eyes. A time of examination, a desire to draw closer. This is a critical time, a time when we who believe might attract or repulse those whose heart has been stirred by our religion or faith (we cannot abort One whom the Almighty has called, but woe to us if we cause stumbling). To touch is to fellowship, to embrace with a full commitment. John literately touched the Messiah. It may be a little while longer before we are able to do the same, but we can and do experience him by faith. This is the essence of John’s testimony.

Concerning the Word of Life In the first four verses of his gospel, John has already discussed, “the Word.” In this epistle (teaching letter) John connects “the Word” to Life.

Life: the life: not biological life, as if a baby has been born, this is Zoe (dzo-ay’) G2222, it is the life we were created for. Genesis 2:7 Then YHVH Elohiym formed man of the dust from the ground (biology) and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Greek: Zoe-spirit life) and man became a living being. We were (and reborn to be) more than angels (though a little lower, Ps 8) with body and spirit. This Life is found IN Christ-the Anointing.

The life was manifested. To manifest is to cause to be visible and apparent. …suddenly Jesus appeared… John 21:1 What is difficult for unbelievers to understand is that not everyone can see what is manifest!

There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.    John 1:9-13

I think that if Y’shua was obvious to everyone, then Life would not be by faith. It is not that Life if a mystery (though it is), but without faith we are blind to the spiritual realm of life..

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Faith is not magical. Magic is a trick, the deceitful use of natural or dark power. Faith is not a force that we tap into for our use. Faith is the technical term for the right to come to the throne of grace because we believe in Y’shua-Jesus.

The Son of God was manifest in this world, but we do not see him with physical eyes. John proclaims him so that we can fellowship in faith. What is fellowship? Y’shua said, “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” Matthew 18:20 John writes about Him because of the Joy it brings.

Just so no one is confused, the chapter ends with a series of “if” statements on faith.

God is pure light.

  • If we are in (spiritual) darkness, then we cannot say that we fellowship with God.
  • If we walk in the light our fellowship is with Y’shua and blood cleansed believers.
  • Telling our self we have no sin is to deceive ourselves (everyone else knows). The truth is not in us.
  • If we will confess our sins, faithful and righteous Y’shua will cleanse and forgive us.
  • If we say, I have not sinned, we make him a liar Gen 3:1b) in our own mind, his word is not in us.

The foundation has been laid, get ready to have your socks knocked off!
