Joshua 6: 17-27

Today in Ladies JrHi Devotions we are going to study Joshua 6:17-27. It is the study of the utter destruction of Jericho. There are so many ideas that I want to cram into our short 25 minutes of study. The idea of First fruits to the Almighty, the Consecration (Burnt) offering, The concept of The Ban, or dedication to total destruction and how the earth is reserved for the exact same judgment that Jericho was subject to. But there is one amazing element to this story that is often just mentioned before moving on to more exciting scenes. The Salvation of Rahab and all who would come to her house.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first (Rahab).  Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.  Therefore comfort one another with these words. nasu

I am utterly amazed at her list of people. What faith!

Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the harlot’s house and bring the woman and all she has out of there, as you have sworn to her.”  So the young men who were spies went in and brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all she had; they also brought out all her relatives and placed them outside the camp of Israel. Joshua 6:22-23 nasu

Scripture does not clearly define how much time Rahab had to witness to the people in her house. At least the five days of the march, added to the three days it took the spies to return to their camp, and the days of circumcision and the Passover celebration in the homeland. It would seem to be less than a month, maybe less than three weeks, it did not matter. If she could get them to listen to her and take the first step of faith, being in her apartment and staying there for all the days of the march, without knowing what the march was all about, then they would be saved.

I’m not sure what was said to them, I’m not sure what they did in her apartment during the march. All I know is the result. When the spies came to her home they brought out

Rahab as they expected.
They also brought her father and mother (Lot could not even convince his wife to stay faithful!)
They brought out all her brothers.
They brought out all she had. I take this to be all her dear friends and co-workers because I do not think that any of Rahab’s “stuff” came out of the city with her.
As a point of fact, they brought out ALL her relatives.Who have I brought out?

Neither my mother or father
None of my brothers.
Most of my believing co-workers and girlfriends were believers before I met them.
My relatives either believe or not, but it has nothing to do with me. I’m not completely convinced that my sons will be there.

What a heavy weight of conviction that brings to me.

But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.  But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.  Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 2 Peter 3:7-11

Jericho gives us a picture of what will happen to the earth one day, a day that is coming sooner then we may think. The Almighty is patient, not wishing for any to perish, but he is not slow in his patience. The day will come suddenly. I know that I will be there on that day, but will those who are precious to me? Will you be there? The battle belongs to the Almighty. He will bring in those we love, but it is our voice he will use to do so. Have courage, only have courage and be chyial!
