Morning Devotions, Joshua 3

….and they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it. Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know The Way by which you must go, for you have not passed This Way before.” Joshua 3:3-4 nkj

How do I know when the Almighty is calling me to do something?

Does He give me some kind of sign? Can I know directly or do I need to ask someone who is more holy than me?

When Israel left Egypt they had the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day to lead and protect them. The generation coming out of the wilderness does not seem to have that symbol of the Almighty’s presence.

…”When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it…”

That seems easy enough. Follow the Ark and the priests who carry it. But wait, there’s more. There is to be about a half a mile between you and the ark.

…”Do not come near it that you may know The Way…”

By the time this generation of the children of Israel were ready to cross the waters of the Jordan into the land of promise, the whole Torah had been written. It was time for the people to look to the Word of God for their guidance instead of looking for signs and wonders (as awesome as those events are). Joshua warned the people not to come near the ark for guidance

“Do not come near it, that you may know The Way by which you must go”

Looking at the Hebrew makes the English easier to understand for me… but you can see this in English. The presence of the Almighty is with the believer. He speaks to us through his Word. He speaks to the entire nation (as a group) from the ark and through the priests. They were the glue that held the nation together, they ministered to the KING of Kings. The ark is his throne on earth, but it has no magic or ability to speak. It simply reminds us of the majesty of the Almighty

So where is God? Does he speak to me?

And Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you… Joshua 3:10a nkj

Always and wrongly translated "this," The Hebrew word z'ot is the aleph-tav (which Y'shua said is himself in the Revelation) is prefixed with a zayin, which pictures a sword (or weapon). Commonly known as "The Sword of the Spirit" which is the word of the Almighty.

To me, one of the great mysteries of our English translation is the word “this.” I simply cannot figure out why the Hebrew word z’ot is constantly translated “this.” Z’ot is not an impersonal pronoun. We will go over this in Ladies Devotions today, but the bottom line is that the word z’ot is a pictograph word for “the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God” Ephesians 6:17. It is by the Word of God, the sword of the Spirit, that you will know that God is among you. Not by an item, not by high-ranking men of God, but by The Word of God you will know that the Almighty is among you. One day the word would be made flesh and walk among them,

…for you have not passed this way before.” Joshua 3:4b nkj

If you are born again, then you have that Word living in your heart, but like Abraham who owned all of the land of promise, yet only possessed the places his foot fell (Genesis 13:17, Deuteronomy 11:24 and Joshua 1:3). In the same way, we need to read and live the word to make it ours. Stand firm… it’s what we do on the Word of God.
