Way Points: Matthew 11:10

This is he of whom it is written,

‘Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare The Way before thee.’
Matthew 11:10 quoting Malachi 3:1 RSV

How often do you hear, “Jesus is coming again!” He is coming again. America might be asleep and unaware that the evidence he told us to look for, evidence that says his return is close, is all around us. The Christian Church may say they are watching for him, but continue in their pagan practices as if they believe that any way is Thee Way.

Today’s Way-Point passage begins with Yowchanan (Yo-khaw-nawn’ — our English Bible renamed him John) in a prison. In another passage you will learn that he was put into prison for daring to challenge a king with the unlawful behavior he was committing. (Luke 3:18-20). If Yowchanan had been born in our era, we would say he was a rock-star. He was very popular with the people. What was it that made him so popular? He spoke the truth to everyone. No one likes being told that they are sinners who will face consequences for their sin. John told them anyway. He also told them the secret to eternal life and the kingdom of heaven. Repentance.

What does repentance mean? Some say that it means you turn your life around. That doesn’t mean you spin circles like an Olympic skater, what it means is that you make YHVH (the Almighty God) the focus of your life. Some of us focus on fun, some on completing goals like finishing school, saving for a vacation, getting a job or beating a disease. None of these things are really bad, so why does Yowchanan teach that we should repent from them? Some people are focused on how they feel, no one tells them what they can do or how to spend their money. Maybe they self medicate to feel good, maybe they like to buy things to feel good. It is the focus of their lives. To repent is to focus on YHVH, not just in church or synagogue, not just in your morning devotions, but throughout your day.

You say that he is invisible, how can you look for him?

He is in The Way. Y’shua (Jesus) told us that he IS The Way. You can look for him, focus on him in The Way you live your life. Yowchanan said, “bear fruit that befits repentance and do not presume… ” What did he mean by bear fruit worthy of repentance?

Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will repent of the evil which he has pronounced against you.  Jeremiah 26:13

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no self-conceit, no provoking of one another, no envy of one another.  Galatians 5: 22-26

Obey the voice of YHVH (the LORD), love, practice self-control (those are first and last on the list, the rest slide into place with obedience to the voice of YHVH)

The Way (DEREK in Hebrew) is the journey with Elohiym

The Way (DEREK in Hebrew) is the journey with Elohiym

What does all of this have to do with you? In today’s passage, Y’shua told the people that there was no one greater then Yowchanan, BUT the person who is the smallest, the least significant on earth (or at least among those of us with mothers) is greater then Yowchanan. Why is that? Is it because we are “born again?” Yes, that is part of the answer, but it is not the true answer. Remember, Yowchanan told people to not rest in their heritage. Being “born again” means we have power to finish the race (please read Hebrews chapter 12). When we are “born again” we become sons of God. Our Abba (father) disciplines us to perfect us, not to punish us (Y’shua took our punishment on the cross)

We walk in The Way, and like Yowchanan-John we are careful how we walk The Way, to prepare it for those we challenge with truth, so that they can repent and walk The Way. Who will you speak the truth to today?
