Way Points; Exodus 13:18

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is The Way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matthew 7:13-14  NKJ

What do you picture when you read Matthew 7:13-14? I have always pictured a narrow, hidden path, an uphill path that forks off of a wide, level street, crowded with people following each other. I wonder if, when Y’shua-Jesus told us about “The Way that leads to life,” if he was talking about today’s Way Point.

The Way (DEREK in Hebrew) is the journey with Elohiym

The Way (DEREK in Hebrew) is the journey with Elohiym

When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest the people repent when they see war, and return to Egypt.” But God led the people round by The Way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the people of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt equipped for battle.  Exodus 13:17-18 RSV

Did you realize that there is more then one way in life? In the days of Moses, after Pharaoh released the children of Israel, they faced a choice about The Way they would go. If you look at a map of the Exodus (maybe there is one in the back of your Bible) you can get an idea about where they could go to get to Mount Sinai (in Arabia, NOT on the Sinai Peninsula as nearly all Bible maps show).

If Moses took the Children of Israel north and east of the Land of Goshen in Egypt, the travel would be easy, level. A scenic walk along a beautiful beach. It would also be the way of death! Terrorist-warriors lived that way. They would turn the beach red with the blood of Israel. Those who lived would return to slavery in Egypt because the easy way was the way of destruction.

The Way of Life was west and south of of Goshen. The Way that God led the people was through a narrow path in the mountains. At most, the people could go five bodies wide on the narrow path through the steep, rocky mountains of the Sinai Peninsula. The entire nation would need to walk through this narrow passage in the hot desert. No cars, no air-conditioning, no pretty camping stops with water and bathrooms, just a hard trek through a narrow passage in the wilderness. This Way will come to an abrupt halt on a beach with an another sea before them, and the army of Pharaoh behind them. IMPOSSIBLE! Except that God said that this is The Way of life!

What would you do?

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6  RSV

I will leave you here, in the wilderness with Israel for now. But I will remind you that Y’shua-Jesus said that there is a Way that ends in life. That Way is not an easy way. It requires you to trust God, to acknowledge that He knows how to get you safely to Life. Follow him, even if it looks like a disaster, because Y’shua-Jesus has also promised to never give up on you or abandon you! Your job is to follow him to Life.

And Jesus came and said to the disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”  Matthew 28: 18-20 RSV
