Word Study, perish (Luke 8:24)

#622 apollumi (ap-ol’-loo-mee); to destroy fully (reflexively, to perish, or lose), literally or figuratively

apóllumi or apolú,. . . from apó (#575) an intens., the mid. óllumi (n.f.), to destroy. The force of apó here is away or wholly; therefore, the verb is stronger than the simple óllumi. To destroy, mid. be destroyed, perish. Also from óllumi (n.f.): ólethros (3639), rain, destruction.

  • Herod was not able to destroy Y’shua.  Matthew 2:13
  • The Pharisees would not destroy Him. Matthew 12:14, Luke 6:9
  • The Chief Priests and scribes will not  destroy Him. Mark 11:18

It is not Y’shua/Jesus who destroys life. He IS eternal life. Rather it is the thief, the enemy of souls, who comes to kill, to steal or snatch away what we think we have, and to destroy. The Lord of Life and those who are of the Prince of the Power of the Air are not compatible.

Luke 4:34 “Let us (demons who possessed a man in the Synagogue)  alone! What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are– the Holy One of God!”

Y’shua is the opposite of (622) perish or destroy. John 6:50-51  “This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not (622) die.  “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”

James 4:12 There is one lawgiver and one Judge, he who is able to  save and to (622) destroy…..

Jude 5 ….he who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward (622) destroyed those who did not believe.

The Lawgiver and Judge was in the boat on the sea in the midst of a hurricane, asleep. If the disciples actually understood who their Master is, then there were other elements that they did not understand about struggle. I must admit that I often struggle with “struggle” and wonder, as I cry out for some mercy, if my Lord is asking me, “Where is your faith?”

Look at what Paul and Peter had to say on this important concept.

2 Corinthians 4:7-11  But we have this treasure (life) in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;  we are  afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing;  persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not (622) destroyed;  always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.  For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

2 Thessalonians 2:10  and with all the deception of wickedness for those who (622) perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved.

2 Peter 3:9  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to (622) perish but for all to come to repentance.

It seems that a hurricane came directly to the little boat on the sea. Perhaps the safest place in all of the Middle East at that moment (indeed in all of creation) was in that boat, filling with water where the Creator slept.  There is nothing that can destroy Eternal Life. The opening statement of John’s Gospel proclaims that life is IN Y’shua and the forces of darkness CANNOT overcome the life. John 1:4

We like to say that there is spiritual warfare that manifests itself in our life. Truly the war is about where I take my stand. It is appointed that every man die, but we who believe are a fellowship of those who have life. We sit in our quiet place as we read Paul’s word to the Corinthians, but out in the boat we perhaps act a little more like those disciples. Where is faith? The powers of darkness cannot overcome the life granted to we who believe.
